  2013 Border Patrol Campaign Tournament

The 2013 Border Patrol Campaign Tournament is an opportunity for players to participate in a Border Patrol campaign and win prizes for achieving specific, pre-defined objectives during the course of the game. Players can win different prizes in different categories.

Tournament Organization

The 2013 Border Patrol Campaign Tournament is presently being organized and is seeking players at all SFB skill levels. Interested players should contact Dirk as soon as possible.

The initial campaign size is expected to be 7 to 9 players, with 6 (or 8) split evenly between the Alliance and Coalition Teams, and one player forming the Orion Pirate Team. In the event that the campaign starts with an even number of players, the Orion Pirate Team will not be introduced until a new player enters the game and wants to play the Orion Pirates.

Additional players may enter the campaign after the start, providing a Team accepts them.

Play sessions are expected to be scheduled one-to-two Saturdays a month, and each session should last approximately 6 to 8 hours. Players should be comfortable with the time commitment.

Player Orientation

Orientation sessions will be available to interested gamers who are new to StarFleet Battles. Conducted by experienced SFB players before the campaign starts, one-on-one sessions will give new players opportunities to learn the fundamentals of ship maneuvering, weapons, systems and tactics. Older hands are also welcome to participate and re-sharpen their skills.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded during the course, and at the conclusion, of the campaign. The prizes will be in the form of game store gift certificates, and a total of roughly US$500 in prizes will be awarded.

The prizes will include the following four types:

First Prizes are awarded to the first player, regardless of Team, who accomplishes the stated objective.
  • Capture an Alien Ship in single combat (US$10)
  • Score an Astounding Victory in single combat (players may only win this prize through a battle with player ships, not through attacking a Supply Convoy, Base, Star System or other non-player units) (US$15)
  • Capture an enemy player's ship in single combat (the Orion Pirate is not eligible for this specific prize) (US$10)
Team Prizes are awarded at the end of the campaign to players on both the Alliance and Coalition Teams.
  • Player whose Character has attained the highest Rank on the Team (the Team-Commander is not eligible; in the event of a tie, the prize is split) (US$50)
  • Player who scored the most internal damage on enemy ships (US$25)
  • Player who had the lowest crew casualties (based on a scaled average using the number of ships and battles fought) (US$25)

Additionally, each Team-Commander will be awarded a prize based on evaluations by the other members of the Team. The judging criteria will include the Team-Commander's leadership, fairness in distributing Rank Points and making ship assignments, and their efforts to help other Team members excel. (Up to US$50)

Finally, the Team that wins the campaign is awarded a Team Victory Prize, which is split evenly among all Team members. (Maximum US$25 per player, up to a maximum of US$100 for the Team)

Orion Pirate Prizes are handled differently, because the Orion Pirates are a special case in so many of the Border Patrol campaign rules. The Orion Pirate Team-Commander is awarded prizes for the following:
  • Avoiding "going into hiding" during the campaign (US$5)
  • Successfully using all Pirate Team money-making methods during a Turn, including successful Supply Convoy interception (first time only) (US$10)
  • One of the following three:
    • Attaining the Pirate Team Victory condition prior to any other Team attaining Victory (US$50); OR
    • Attaining the highest Rank, of all players, at the end of the campaign (US$35); OR
    • For each 100 BPV the Pirate Team has in its Treasury at the end of the campaign (US$1 per 100 BPV)
GameMaster Prize awards and amounts are solely at the discretion, and based on the judgement, of the GameMaster. Any player is eligible without regard to Team or position. The prizes may include some or all of the following, and the awards may be split in case of a tie:
  • Most Improved Player (the player whose SFB skills improve the most during the campaign)
  • Most Valuable Player (the player who was most valuable in combat - which does not necessarily mean that they scored the most damage)

It is possible that not all prizes will be awarded (for example, if no player captures an Alien Ship, or the Orion Pirate is forced to go "into hiding").

Materials Provided

The GameMaster will furnish the following materials for use during the regular play sessions:

  • A printed copy of the Border Patrol Campaign Rules (one copy per Team; Team members may print their own copies)
  • The Border Patrol Campaign Strategic Map
  • A binder for each Team-Commander to organize their Team's campaign materials
  • To the extent possible for tactical battles during regular play sessions, tactical maps, SSDs, EAFs, ship counters and other counters (e.g. drones, shuttlecraft, plasma torpedoes, turn markers etc.).
  • All necessary campaign forms
  • If requested, an individual Mailing List for the Alliance and Coalition Teams (in addition to the campaign Mailing List established for all players)
  • Online electronic copies of published campaign materials

Players are responsible for providing:

  • Their own copy of the SFB tactical game rules (the SFB Master Rulebook, Stock #5412, is recommended and may be ordered through the game store; sharing your own rulebook with another player on the same Team is fine)
  • Counters, EAFs and/or SSDs for any ships that the GameMaster doesn't provide
  • China markers/wax pencils for writing on GameMaster-provided SSDs, EAFs etc.
  • Their own dice (SFB is a d6-based system)
  • Optional but very useful play aids, such as BattleCards (part of SFB Module A+, Stock #5625-X, which may be ordered through the game store)
  • If playing a tactical battle outside of a regular play session, players must provide their own tactical map(s), counters, EAFs etc. (SFB Module H1, Stock #4501, and Module A+, Stock #5625-X, are both recommended, and may be ordered through the game store)
  • Their own transportation to/from regular play sessions
  • Their own food (the game store sells drinks and snacks, and there are several restaurants in the shopping center that have take-out)
